Buy high strength ceramic bowls and dishes from Thailand

Wanthai bowls and dishes get their high strength from the careful selection of the materials that make up the ceramics. And additionally through two separate firing processes. After the first firing process at 750 degrees Celsius, the ceramic blank is cooled down to room temperature. Then the decoration is applied by hand in several steps with brushes of different sizes. The years of experience of the Thai decorators come into play during the painting process. With a good eye and a lot of patience, the desired pattern of the decoration is applied with blue paint before the next step is a dipping bath. First the applied pattern has to dry in, for this the bowls and bowl blanks are lined up in a queue.

Bowls and dishes from Thailand with underglaze painting

All elements of the decorative painting are first applied completely before the entire bowl or dish is pulled through a prepared dipping bath with a great deal of craftsmanship. The liquid of the dipping bath is continuously moved in the lower part in order to achieve an even application of the glaze liquid. This even application is particularly important to ensure food safety. A closed glaze cover separates the applied colours from the filled food. For example, the colour pigments of the bowl or dish cannot get into the filled soup. Of course, this also contributes extraordinarily to the longevity, which not only protects the decoration from destruction, but also protects the bowl or dish from aggressive cleaning agents, such as those used in the dishwasher.

The 2nd firing process - how a thin layer of glass is created

The second firing process at about 1250 °C gives the ceramic bowl or dish a thin layer of glass that promises high strength and durability. This is achieved by slow heating in the huge gas kiln, which is as big as a double garage. Over many hours, the dishes are heated according to a precise temperature curve. And heated to such an extent that a thin layer of glass emerges from the glazing liquid. Fascinating and highly demanding at the same time! After the last firing, the almost finished pottery is subjected to a precise quality control and only the pottery with a closed glaze cover is allowed to be shipped to Germany. Finally, the bottom of the bowl and dish is ground free of glaze residues to give the bowl and dish a secure stand and a smooth bottom. This also prevents any glaze residue from scratching your table at home or in the restaurant.
